What is vegetable-tanned leather?Updated 2 months ago

We use high-quality vegetable-tanned leather. While vegetable-tanned leather takes months to make, no chemicals are used to tan the leather—only natural and organic substances are used during this production process. Because vegetable tanning requires no synthetic coatings, it does absorb moisture and oil, which means it is not water resistant.

Vegetable-tanned leather is more sensitive to moisture (including sweat, humidity, and friction), and in some rare cases, it can release natural oils or dye that may transfer onto light-colored fabrics with repeated contact. We recommend avoiding direct contact with light-colored clothing during heavy use or on humid days.

We chose not to have our manufacturer apply a leather protectant spray during production because it is a chemical treatment—and our goal with the our leather goods is to keep the material as natural and minimally processed as possible. By leaving the leather untreated, we give each customer the option to decide whether or not to apply a protectant based on their personal use and preferences.

To maintain the longevity of your MINA leather items, we recommend regular maintenance with leather conditioner. Cadillac Leather Conditioner is a favorite we use in the MINA office.
